From the Maitai Dam caretaker’s house go up the road to Teal Saddle, then up the overgrown zig-zag track to point 1168.  From there, head down to Maungatapu Saddle, and back to the cars along the Maungatapu Road. Possibly with a side trip from 1168 to Saddle Hill and back. About 7 hours, plus 2½ hours for the side trip.
