Bluebird day, crisp snow, excellent instruction
Snow day at Rainbow ski field – Saturday 8 September 2018
After intros, briefing and gear check, we were crunching over the snow by 9.20am.
Pete re-introduced us to making steps and using ice axes as we traversed to a frozen tarn. On the slopes we practiced self-arrests with and without ice axes.
After lunch and cramponing practice we climbed the north ridge to discover glorious views of Lake Rotoiti and the St Arnaud Range.
From the top of Mt McRae (1878m) most descended to the south; others to the north to enjoy bum-sliding down to the car park.
By 3.30pm we were on our way home after a magic day.
Special thanks to Pete for his excellent instruction.
Participants: Colin (leader/scribe) Chris, Christine, Di, Eric, Esther, Joy, Marie, Pete (instructor), Astrid and Kathy (visitors).
