A happy band
Mt Evans – Sunday 28 April 2019
After overnight rain the skies cleared to enable a happy band of eighteen to have an enjoyable day conquering Mt Evans. This was part two of the club's exploration of the route. Part one, from the south, was led by Robert last November.
An early start from Richmond meant we could have morning tea at the Moa Park Shelter, after following the well-used track from the Canaan Downs carpark and over Wainui Saddle. From there, we soon found the old Lands and Survey track, no longer maintained but still well marked with orange Agee jar lids, along the easy ridge towards Mt Evans. We did a slight detour through the bush to have lunch perched on the rocky outcrop that forms the peak itself. Then back to the track and out to the farmland. Once over the farm fence and afternoon tea, we meandered through the paddocks back to the carpark, roughly following the Gold Creek mountain bike track.
It took about two hours into Moa Park and five hours back to the carpark, including breaks. The happy band were Joy, Maria, Rob, Marian, Donell, Dale, Jo, Chris, Odette, Robyn, Lesley G, Julie, Julian, Bernard, Mary, David S (scribe), plus Sam (first trip with the club) and Ian (second trip with the club).
