Up, down and around2021 07 31 city heights

City Heights, Saturday July 31, 2021

A collection of coughs and colds meant fewer participants on the day.  Those who came however, were healthy, hearty and had a great time.  We started from Founders Park at 9 am, making our way through the Wakapouaka cemetery.   15 in and 15 out.  What a relief!  For the record, the headstone restoration work being done there by an enthusiastic group of volunteers meant that the memorials which had been worked on looked magnificent – classical in design while glistening and gleaming in the sun.  What a lovely way to honour those early Nelson residents.

Once up on the Sir Stanley Whitehead track, we stopped for morning tea.  Away we went again along to the Centre of NZ and down the backside of it into the Maitai valley.  Where next?  Up Cleveland and Atmore Terraces and onto the combined walking and biking Jacks Track.  Food time again so we lunched at the highest spot admiring the clear views across town and out over the port.

From there we descended to Brook St via various tracks finishing at the bottom of the Coppermine trail.  The walk was leisurely back down Brook St, along past the Botanics sports field to the Milton St Sprig and Fern where we wiled away the time with more eating, drinking and chatting until 3 pm, when I'd assured the trip members that we’d be finished by.  We’ll put in greater tramping efforts on the next trip.

Those who came were Alison (leader and scribe),  David W, Anthea, Brian, Dale, Donell, Gael, Helen, Julian, Kerry, Maria, Rob and Val along with visitors Jenny and Justine.
