Wainui Hut Circuit – Abel Tasman National Park
Sunday 22 January 2023
Just before 9am, eight trampers set off from the Canaan road-end, stopping for morning tea at Wainui Saddle.
From there it did not seem to take long to get up to the Inland Track where we turned left and walked along the gently undulating Evans Ridge.
We stopped at the junction down to Wainui Hut for a short snack and drink before heading off down the track.
These tracks have recently been cleared, making the walking easier. A carpet of dracophyllum leaves, Kaka, an ancient rata, and a bright yellow “dog’s vomit fungus”, were some of the things of note.
We stopped for lunch in the sun at Wainui Hut, and once regaining Wainui Saddle, followed the route down through the farm to the cars.
The 15 km trip took us 6 hours and we finished with a well-deserved mixed berry ice-cream from the Woolshed Café.
The team: Tony (leader), Maria, Rob, Sue, Robert, Marian, and visitors Penny and Karthiga.
